Levels & Subjects I teach: GCSE: Chemistry A-level (IB): Chemistry Exam Board experience: I have personally tutored students completing AQA GCSE chemistry and A-level students doing OCR chemistry. I do however understand how to access and utilise specific exam board specifications for teaching so would be happy to help students achieve qualifications with any UK board (e.g AQA, Edexcel and OCR). Languages: Native English speaker SEND (Special Education Needs and Disability) experience: I currently have no experience teaching children with additional needs and disabilities. Preferred student age groups: Both A-level and GCSE students About me: Hi there! my name is Joe and I currently studying for a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry at the University of Sussex. Before joining the Sussex I obtained my masters degree in chemistry from the University of York graduating with first-class honours. I particularly enjoy spending time in the lab, with my work being focused on developing new chemical reactions. Outside of the lab, you can usually find me strategising over the chess board, exploring worlds in the latest video games or stopping my cats from causing chaos! As a tutor, I hope to make chemistry more accessible and hopefully enjoyable for students! Typically, my lessons consist of explaining concepts to students that they have been struggling with, followed by crucial problem-solving and exam practice to build confidence. Following each session/ topic, you can expect homework/ exam questions, which I will mark and provide crucial regular feedback.

How tutoring at Key Stage 1 can benefit your child

What is Key Stage 1?

Key Stage 1 (KS1) is the name given to Year 1 and Year 2 at primary schools, when pupils are aged between 5 and 7. It sets out which subjects must be taught as part of the national curriculum, which is followed by state schools.

Your child may be tested on what they have learned at the end of KS1. These assessments are known as SATs (which stands for ‘Standardised Assessment Tests’). They are not pass/fail tests but simply provide an indication of your child’s progress. It is not compulsory for schools to take the SATs in KS1.

What are the main subjects studied at Key Stage 1?

The KS1 curriculum is designed to introduce children to the core subjects they will learn throughout their school career.

The subjects are:

Religious Education (RE) is also taught, but parents can choose for their children to opt out of some or all the lessons. Schools usually also teach Personal, Social and Health Dducation (PSHE), citizenship and modern foreign languages.

How is Key Stage 1 assessed?

Children undertake a phonics screening check at the end of Year 1, which evaluates their reading and pronunciation skills.

Schools who do not take the SATs will use their own assessment systems to track the progress children in their school are making.

If your school takes the SATs, the subjects are:

  • English reading (comprehension)

  • English grammar, punctuation, and spelling

  • Mathematics (basic arithmetic)

The focus of Key Stage 1

KS1 is where a child begins to develop their skills and understanding in the key subjects taught in the curriculum.

Speaking, reading and writing are considered core skills as mastery of the English language is central to developing an understanding in all subjects. In KS1 maths, children to begin to understand mathematical language, understand the fundamentals and begin to solve problems by applying this knowledge.

In addition, teaching children about healthy habits and different belief systems can help them become well-rounded individuals who understand the world around them.

How to choose a Key Stage 1 tutor

Child are all different and progress at different rates. Some will need extra support in building core skills or improving confidence, and others may need more of a challenge to keep them engaged. Either way, lessons need to be personalised to meet their individual needs.

It’s also important to choose a tutor with experience in the KS1 curriculum and who understands how important it is to make learning fun.

GoStudent’s tutors are highly qualified and offer an interactive and personalised learning experience. Our online sessions can be scheduled for a time that suits you, and you will receive regular updates on your child’s progress.

Tutoring will give your child a strong foundation in the key concepts will set them up to succeed in learning, not only at KS2 but throughout their school career.
